Oval shield flat profile of the type used by the auxiliaries of the Roman army during the I - II century AD

The construction features mirroring those of "scutum" legionnaire, with more layers of wood glued together and covered with leather colored cloth, reinforced rim and brass central boss of the same material.

The symbols drawn on the outer face appear on a shield shouldered by an auxiliary infantryman played on the Trajan column.

This flat Roman shield is also known as Parma Equestris. It was predominantly used by the mounted Auxilia (auxiliary cavalry), which were organised in military units, the so-called Alae.
