Pillory or sedan, instrument used for the public display of the convicts thus serving as a warning to others not to commit crimes. In the Middle Ages stood in the market places or at the entrance of the city in almost all regions of Europe.

The pillory was considered a mild punishment, but often became a torture when the victim by the neck and arms immobilized in the beam, was teased, slapped, burned and mutilated.
